Family Time

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and was able to spend some quality time with your family. When owning a home based business it is easy to come under the perception that because you are home every day that and although working, still within earshot of your family that it constitute as family time. You could not be further from the truth. The downside of home based businesses if you do not manage your time wisely is that even though you are home, your family loses out. You may even find yourself making promises to your children to do something special with them only to later recant and say you just don’t have the time as an important business issue has come up.

Your family still requires “you” time just as if you worked a nine to five out of your home. That means setting a quitting time and days off so you can dedicate individual uninterrupted time with your family. After all, one of the main reason other then money people engage in a home based business is to have a more flexible schedule to do things with their family.

  1. Family comes first with me. Of course, if my business is not doing well the family time is not the best either. I really work hard at both because they are both important. The time is always there, but the funds? Sometimes yes and sometimes not so good.

Depending on the age and size of your family, they may be able to be your employees. Even young children and teens can do things like open envelopes, make copies, shred documents and stuff envelopes. By paying them a salary instead of giving them an allowance you are teaching them about business while keeping your income at home. It also promotes family time during the working day.

  3. I always make time for my family. They know that when the door to my den is closed they better not open it unless someone is bleeding or the house is on fire. I take breaks throughout the day and they've learned that most things really can wait. Then at the end of my work day, I have time to do the things they want to do. We both win with this arrangement.
