When the Internet Interfers with your Home Based Business

When your home based business requires you to be on the Internet it is easy to be caught up in other activities other then work related business. With the vast social communities such as Facebook, MySpace, Multiply along with numerous chat avenues, game sites, stuff to read and yes, even blogs, a person can get easily side tracked. Like right now – are you on the “clock” as you are reading this? I am just as guilty. In the early days of my home based business the freedom of not working under someone and all restrictions lifted made surfing the net so attractive. I could get by with it without getting into any trouble. It was great, but my work productivity suffered. However, if you are reading this right now, you are forgiven, as it can help to build home based business work ethics. Think of it as continuing education.

However, while on the “clock” instead of being sucked into the endless amount of surfing at your fingertips, when possible, disconnect and deal with emails off line, and shut down the chat features! Instead, schedule break times as if you were working a normal 9 to 5 job. During those break times feel free to surf to your hearts desire!

Don’t try to claim that you are multi tasking successfully when you are chatting with your friend while working. There is a time to multi task and when doing so it should not be recreation and work. Multi tasking is when you are on hold on the phone and shoot off an email to a potential lead while waiting for example. If you do not want your work to suffer, stay focused on the task at hand and your home based business will be a success like my home based business.

  1. Guilty as accused. FreeCell is my pitfall. Although, sometimes I feel like I need that break and I might spend 5 minutes chillin with a couple of games. I consider it my smoke break since I don't smoke. At first it was easy to while away an hour or two playing but now I only take a 5 minute break as needed.

  2. I totally agree. Before I started my home based business my home computer was just a toy. It was hard to make myself work. I fixed that by moving the computer to a room that had fewer distractions. I turned it into a 'work' space. It helped me make the switch from play time to work day. I still play, but not until after the work is done.

  3. I've never been one to 'surf the net' but I spend a lot of time chatting and playing games. I did have to make some concessions when I started working out of the house. It was hard at first, but I think I even enjoy my free time more now than when I was spending more time on the computer.

  4. It's very hard sometimes not to get caught up in things other than work when I'm on the computer. I've only been at this a short time and whenever I get stuck on anything I go open a game to play. I know I have to quit this and I'll figure it out, sooner or later.

  5. I just recently got my first computer so I don't even know how to do much except my work. I'm not in any hurry to discover how the play features work either if they cause all this trouble. Best to keep my mind on business at least for now.

  7. I'm always tempted to take a turn around the net but I know I have to wait until business is taken care of first. But, it's hard.

  8. Sometimes, the temptation is just too great. Pop ups kill me sometimes. I have to follow them and see what it's all about. Most of the time, I've wasted valuable work time, but occasionally it's worth it.

  9. I give myself 3 half hour breaks throughout my work day. It works better than two 15 minutes breaks and an hour for lunch. I use that time for personal e-mail, games and surfing the web. It makes it easier to stay on task when I know I'll be playing again soon.

  10. I am the worst when it comes to staying out of games and chat rooms. I know I have to stop but I still get my work done. It just takes me all day to do it.
